Saturday’s Touring Car Masters Trophy race will see Torana table toppers John Bowe and Ryan Hansford bring up significant TCM milestones at the green flag.

Bowe will start his 300th race in the category, and is the first driver to achieve the feat after contesting in at least one round every year since 2008, whilst Hansford will become the 24th TCM driver to notch up a ton.

Bowe, a four time champion in the category, started TCM life in a Chevrolet Camaro, before jumping in a Ford Mustang Trans Am nicknamed ‘Sally.’

In 2015, he then shifted to the Bendigo Retro Muscle Cars Torana, in which he has competed in 144 TCM races with.

Hansford, who sits two points off Bowe for the championship, has only ever known the Holden Torana SL/R in the fan-favourite category. At the last TCM outing, he romped to back-to-back victories over Bowe to close the gap at the top of the table.

Sandown represents the beginning of the second half of the TCM season, with three different drivers having won the three rounds so far – George Miedecke winning the Sydney season opener, Bowe in Round 2, and Hansford taking the Townsville street circuit.

It’s the 13th time that the TCM will have visited Historic Sandown, and the first Victorian round of the championship since the season finale in 2019.

Jim Richards is unsurprisingly the most successful driver in Sandown’s TCM history, winning nine races and four rounds at the venue in a storied career.

The circuit known as the ‘home or Horsepower,’ has been a happy hunting ground for the big capacity cars with the Mustang being the most successful vehicle at the circuit with 12 race wins.

The Holden Torana has only taken out four victories at Sandown – though Bowe’s consistency saw him grab overall victories in 2016, 17 and 19 aboard his SL/R 5000.

Steven Johnson holds the qualifying record at Sandown (1m13.5688s) while Bowe holds the race lap record, with his 1m15.1481s best set back in 2016.

Action commences on Friday at Sandown with tickets available, and all the action to be broadcast live on Stan Sport and the Nine Network this weekend.
