1965 Alfa Romeo Sprint GT

A very well sorted Alfa Romeo with numerous completes at Targa Tasmania along with Class Wins in addition to many other completes and wins at other significant events.
Current CAMS logbook. Ready to win again.
Owned since 1999, and it first ran in the Classic Adelaide, which it completed without missing a stage, but finished well down the placings, since it was completely standard except for the roll cage and other safety modifications required to obtain its CAMS logbook.
Car was totally stripped and mechanical rebuild was undertaken soon after purchase to make this a very capable car. Work was done at AVANTI in Brisbane by Richard Anderson, who has a reputation for his expertise in building historic Alfa Romeo race cars.
The modifications were originally done with the intention of entering Targa in either standard specification format (bumpers fitted and standard air cleaner etc) , or Limited Modified Specification.
Always scored Targa trophies each time it ran, and at least one class win in LMS and in SS it scored another couple of Targa trophies with one or two class wins.
It is fitted with a genuine Autodelta limited slip diff with a custom made 5.3 ratio as per the period Alfa GTA's. These are virtually impossible to find and highly sought after for historic racing.
It also has custom made components for suspension with much investment made in this area to ensure it handles wonderfully.
All the following work was done by Avanti;
1. Full rebuild of 1600 motor using a replacement cylinder head and all new components. and was meticulously assembled. The head was was carefully gas flowed with great attention paid to the intake port shape and diameter, and the profile of the valve seats and the valve guides. Post rebuild the rebuilt webers were set up on a dyno. The motor has potential for more power with different cams, and the bottom end will cope.
2. Full rebuild of gearbox with new clutch.
3. Full rebuild of steering box and all steering components.
4. Full rebuild of front and rear suspension, with ride height, springs and shock absorbers a bespoke combination. Polyurethane bushes were used and recently replaced.
5. Full rebuild of brakes, with upgrade to vented rotors on the front and aluminium calipers from an Alfa GTV6. Competition pads are fitted with rear calipers and master cylinder recently replaced.
6. Prop shaft was rebuilt and balanced.
7. All minor components like alternator, water pump, fuel pump etc were replaced at the time of the rebuild. The car has been impeccably reliable and has never missed a stage in a rally.
8. Professionally designed and built roll cage is fitted to CAMS specifications.
9. Exhaust extractors were fitted, but the rest of the exhaust is standard to comply with the rules for SS.
10. A custom made air intake with trumpets (an Avanti design) was fitted to the car initially and comes with the car along with the standard air filter. The car is noticeably freer breathing with this fitted.
No serious accidents in the car. When setting up the suspension it was clear that the chassis is dead straight. A few strengthening plates were welded into places known to fatigue or flex. Avanti had patterns for these that were used to strengthen the chassis in competition cars. Paint is ok but it’s no show queen.
The car has done many Targa’s, never failing to score a plate, a Classic Adelaide, a Suncoast Classic, a couple of Speed on Tweeds, and a multitude of sprints at Morgan Park, Leyburn, Gatton ..and more.
To be sold with a recent service / oil change / filter, and a set of points.
Original interior with seats is available if the new owner wishes to return it to a road car.
