The Triumph TR7 needs no introduction whatsoever. A car that saw considerable success across a variety of motorsport disciplines, it was in rallying events that the car really showed its true capabilities. In fact, at the time the TR7 was arguably one of the fastest rally cars of its era in a straight line and – thanks to the Rover V8 under the bonnet – it was also one of the best sounding too.
A genuine enthusiast’s build, this particular example from 1977 has been completely transformed into a tarmac rally-inspired road car — restored from the ground up with meticulous attention to detail and a focus on performance, drivability, and reliability. With its current owner since 2018, an incredible amount of time and investment has been made to ensure that the car performs to its potential and is equally as reliable. During the seven year ownership period, the Triumph has barely covered 2,000kms and thus it is offered for sale so that it can be used as intended.
Powering the rear wheels is a fully rebuilt Rover 3.9L V8, mated to a Rover SD1 five-speed gearbox, tuned to original TR8 specification with an upgraded ignition system and twin Zenith carburettors. This powertrain delivers effortless torque and period-correct character, backed by GAZ adjustable suspension all round, upgraded disc brakes front and rear and new Mini Lite-style wheels shod with Dunlop performance tyres (including matching spare). The car’s cooling system has also been upgraded via a TR8-spec alloy radiator and thermatic fan.
The body has undergone a full rotisserie respray, complemented by a complete interior refit. No cracks, no loose ends and everything functions as it should. The factory dash is in perfect condition, and comforts such as air conditioning and power steering are retained, making this an ideal weekend cruiser or event-ready entrant. In fact, it was the exceptional condition of the interior of the car that was the main reason its current custodian decided to keep it as a road-going vehicle rather than converting it into a tarmac rally special – it was simply too good to turn into a race car.
The cosmetic upgrades to the TR7 are both tasteful and period-authentic, including a Rimmer Bros sports side skirt and body kit. Mechanicals were entrusted to Duncan Alston, South Australia’s go-to engineer for Targa and tarmac rally builds... a nod to the quality of workmanship and engineering integrity behind this build.
