It's a simple idea, take an already outstanding six-cylinder E46 BMW M3 and stuff it with a 500hp V10 from its big brother, the M5. In reality, that simple idea understates the amount of re-engineering undertaken on this vehicle to deliver performance and durability traits that BMW’s own M division would be proud of.

Starting with an E46 M3 base, the owner and Brintech Customs embarked on the full drivetrain conversion in 2018. Starting with the removal of the standard M3’s six-cylinder engine, the team set about preparing and reinforcing the vehicle’s subframe and mounting points for the larger and significantly more powerful engine. In line with these upgrades, engine management and electrical systems were also enhanced to accept the new drivetrain – including the fitment of an M5 ECU, CAN Bus module, and OEM dash.

With the standard M3 engine ditched, the powertrain now consists of an iconic 5-litre V10 (S85B50) engine from an E60 M5, paired to an E92 M3 6-speed manual gearbox which drives the rear wheels via a rebuilt E46 differential. Mechanically sound, the owner has embarked on substantive log-book and preventative maintenance including the recent replacement of rod bearings and high-pressure VANOS components.

Mechanically, the vehicle's HVAC system was re-engineered to work with the new engine, while engine intake, exhaust and cooling were also revised to support the 500hp drivetrain – including contrasting bonnet vents. Chassis and driveline hardware was also revised to include E46 sport springs, Koni adjustable rear shocks, Turner Motorsport sway bar upgrades front & rear, adjustable rear control arms and larger CSL style wheels.

In all, this V10 M3 is like nothing else on the road in Australia. Completely engineered and registered in New South Wales, this is one M3 that even Top Gear couldn’t get their hands on – but you can.
