When you think of iconic Japanese cars from the seventies, a number of makes and models immediately spring to mind. But if you had to nominate just one car that best represented design cues, styling and engineering from the era, it would have to be the Mazda RX-3 Coupe.

When it was released here in 1972, the rotary-powered coupe was a legend-in-waiting and without question the car has well and truly achieved cult status amongst the Australian automotive community.

This particular example has been under current custodianship for almost two decades, its owner making no apologies for being incredibly passionate about all things Mazda – something that is clearly reflected in the quality of this Super Deluxe.

Australian delivered and meticulously looked after since acquiring the car from another fellow enthusiast, the RX-3 presents in excellent condition throughout, with its eye-catching Alexandria Gold paint and polished chrome styling.

Under the bonnet, the RX-3 boasts a 12A rotary engine that was recently reconditioned (with a mild port carried out as well) allowing the Wankel to rev freely and deliver more sprightly acceleration than a standard unit. A five speed manual gearbox from a RX7 replaces the standard transmission and complements the higher-output engine perfectly.

The RX-3 has also received a suspension and brake upgrade, in the form of new shock absorbers, sway bar, brakes and a reconditioned brake booster.

As you can see from the photos, the interior of the car presents extremely well. The seller notes that there is a small tear in the top of the front passenger seat behind the headrest but aside from this, everything else interior-wise is in solid, original condition.

There are some minor rust bubbles starting to appear below the headlights and on the front skirt – typical of these cars and understandable given the age of the vehicle – however it wouldn’t take much effort nor investment to address this.

The perfect Sunday cruiser or perhaps an addition to an existing collection, this RX-3 represents an excellent opportunity for its new owner to acquire a car that is not only highly sought-after amongst Australian car enthusiasts but a desirable collectable on a global scale.
