1981 BMW 6 Series

It’s time to move my 1981 BMW 635 (E24) onto a new owner. Apart from short term ownership by a close friend around 2013 after which I bought it back in 2016, I have owned this car since I purchased it in 2005.
The car now has 6 months full Victorian registration with custom plates VIIIIV which is 635 Roman numerals.
If you are looking for an original car, this is probably not the car for you, however read on and your head may be turned, but please bear in mind the car is 45 years old and not perfect, when considering your options.
The car is Alpine White and has the following:
• Later model 635 M30 series engine with later model Motronic fuel injection and engine management system. The engine is in good condition and runs a K@N filter.
• Originally an automatic, it now runs a 5-speed Getrag overdrive gearbox of the correct era and clutch was replaced in 2013 at the time of the sale to my friend.
• This gearbox is perfectly matched to the 3.65 ratio side loader Limited Slip Differential.
• Springs are Eibach and front shocks are Bilstein while the rear shocks are Pedders.
• The interior is black and has the rare and genuine E24 Recaro sports seats including the ultra-rare centre arm rest in the front.
• There are alloy front and rear strut braces which were manufactured by US based Mason Engineering, well known in the US BMW racing circles.
• The exhaust is a twin stainless steel Stebro system. Stebro was renowned for building quality performance exhausts for a range of European and American cars and operated out of Canada. I understand the owner died about 12-13 years ago and the trail is lost from there, but I believe also they may now trade through Facebook.
• In front of the Stebro exhaust is a set of jet coated limited edition extractors built by HM Headers. These extractors consist of two, three pipe units designed so the engine firing order alternates between the two, to reduce congestion of the gases as they exit the system. One of ten sets made as I understand it and please note the photo shows the extractors on a spare head before fitment to the car.
The tool kit is almost complete with genuine BMW Heyco tools.
• The wheels are a genuine full set of E34 BMW M5 forged wheels (not cast) complete with genuine Throwing Star alloy covers. This staggered set is known as the Nürburgring Option (Style 21) with front wheels being 17 x 8 inch and the rear wheels being 17 x 9 inch. The spare wheel is also a genuine M5 forged wheel which is slightly different in construction (different offset) to accommodate front or rear wheel applications as required. These wheels are no longer available and are very expensive when offered on the second-hand market.
• When my friend owned it in the mid twenty teens, he had the car resprayed and the window tint redone while at the same time having the small rust spots repaired in the doors and front guards.
• He also had the differential mounts professionally remanufactured as the E24 can suffer some cracking over time at the location of the mounts.
• Due to a long term, and undetected leaking windscreen and the drains from the sunroof, yes it has a sun roof, there was a rust issue in the front floors which have been corrected in steel, covered by Dynamat and Dynapad, while at the same time a left footrest has been installed. Please refer to photos. There are no structural rust issues with this car.
• A new Kenwood KMM-BT408 Digital Media Receiver with four flush mounted speakers with new wiring has recently been fitted to the car along with a new electric antenna. This system allows for Bluetooth phone communications and Spotify etc. Must confess I have used this system briefly in radio mode only and it’s a good sound, but the rest of is a little like white noise to me ... I just don’t understand the technology!
• A professionally manufactured Australian Chief Car Cover fits the car like a glove and is included in the sale.
• New and subtle Motorsport decals have been purchased with the intention of applying them however time has not permitted this, but they will be included with the sale. Please see example in the photos of the silver 635.
• It’s a lovely car but I have too many cars and it’s time for a cull.
The car will benefit from:
• New door rubbers and they are available. While there is some wind noise, the ‘Vintage’ in me hasn’t been concerned but a new owner may wish to make it quieter.
• Airconditioning needs a recharge.
• Some research on why the interior lights are not functioning along with the under bonnet and boot lights. Seems to me there is perhaps a single relay or similar which might be a problem.
• Passenger door not unlocking with central locking.
• Two cracks on the dashboard.
There will be other little things that will crop up as the car is 45 years old now, however with a new and enthusiastic owner, I have no doubt any matters arising will be sorted. The 635 is one of BMWs very practical classic performance/touring cars.
