1969 Chevrolet Corvette - Group S Racer

Without a doubt one of the most popular – and hugely successful – racing cars from the 1960s is the Chevrolet Corvette, with its unmistakable lines, long bonnet and thumping V8. Not only was the car campaigned comprehensively in the USA but also at Le Mans and throughout Europe. And now, almost 60 years after its production run, the Corvette is still just as capable on the track as ever.

A popular choice in Group S Racing here in Australia (a category of racing for mildly modified production sports cars from the 1950s, 60s and 70s), this particular Corvette has won a number of races and even more podium finishes. It is truly a “no expense spared” build with only the very best components used to ensure maximum performance and reliability on the track.

Under the bonnet sits a 350 cubic inch 5.7 litre V8 built by Mick Webb Performance Engines that fresh from the dyno and has never been raced. Running a Callies crankshaft, Compstar rods, JE Pistons small block piston kit (4.030 inch bore diameter) and Ferrea Racing Engine Valves, the engine puts out 574hp at 7,100 RPM with a maximum torque figure of 486 ft/lbs at 5,100 RPM. Extensive head work was carried out in the US, including ISKY springs, locks and retainers, ISKY roller lifters, a Race Series oil pan, Melling blueprinted oil pump and a Comp Roller camshaft.

A steel lightweight flywheel has also been installed as well as a Quarter Master triple plate clutch, to make the most of the Corvette’s brand new race series four speed manual transmission. Suspension is taken care of by Bilstein shock absorbers. The car’s braking system has also been upgraded with overhauled front and rear calipers and new discs all round. An adjustable brake bias system has been fitted and the car is wearing Ultralight US race mags shod in Hoosier TD-R tyres (25.5x8.5-15 size).

Inside the cabin and you will immediately see that a considerable amount of time and effort has been invested to ensure maximum safety and driver comfort. A full Motorsport Australia approved cage, Racetech seats and 6-point harnesses plus a 6-point onboard fire extinguisher system provide ultimate peace of mind whilst a host of Autometer gauges keep the driver informed at all times. The centrally mounted tachometer includes recall functionality (as well as an adjustable shift light) whilst a quick-release suede Momo wheel takes care of steering input from the driver.

Motorsport Australia log booked and ready to hit the track, the Corvette is currently club registered (non-transferable) to facilitate inspections and test drives. The car can be viewed in Thomastown prior to the auction closing.

The owner of the car has set a very reasonable reserve – a fraction of the build cost – to make way for another project so if you are considering getting involved in Group S Racing then this Corvette has everything it takes to get its new owner up the pointy end of the field.
