1. ENGINE – 6.2L – 525hp ENGINE
Ford, Chevy, and Dodge have had a rivalry as old as each brands name. The big three automakers in the US all have their own take on the engine for the Thunder class of cars. The Camaro engine was developed using the Chevy’s research from circle-track racing, they took their aggressive ASA camshaft and slipped it in to the LS3 6.2 L engine, and came out with their version of the 525 HP engine. Mopar, uses their legendary Hemi engine with the hemispherical chamber making room for larger explosions, and Ford started their version of the 376 Cubic Inch engine out in an F-150 and moved the engine to the Mustang for racing.
2. TRANSMISSION – PADDLE SHIFT 6 SPEED SEQUENTIAL TRANSMISSION
Each car has a version of the Paddle Shift 6 Speed Sequential Manual Transmission. This transmission really connects driver and car, and allows for shifting through all gears without the need for the clutch. The movement is short and fast, and drivers can shift up and down through their gears with lightning speed. Thunder and lightning at these races.
3. BODY – LATEST MUSTANG
The aerodynamics for all the body styles have gotten incredibly optimized for speed and handling. It’s like they have been training in the gym hardcore and have stepped out super sleek and ready to be judged in the next race.
4. DRIVE TRAIN – REAR WHEEL DRIVE
Balance and weight distribution. Having rear wheel drive allows the cars to go faster, and when we are racing, that is what we want!
5. TRACTION – REAR WHEEL TRACTION CONTROL
Even though the weight is evenly distributed, when the engine is producing 525hp the wheels are going to break loose. To keep things under control all the cars are equipped with rear wheel traction control.
6. CHASSIS – SPACE-FRAME CHASSIS
The Space Frame Chassis for each car is designed a bit differently. There are so many variations when considering the material weight, versus strength, and also price. Every engineer has a different take, but they all agree the Space Frame is the only one strong enough for this type of racing. Rumble on.
