Ex JPS Team BMW M3 – The Last One Built
Before you bother asking, I won't separate items.
The car’s log book was issued on 10/9/87 and it’s first race was the James Hardie 1000 that year. The drivers were 1986 ATCC Champion Robbie Francevic and the JPS Team’s engine guru Ludwig “Goofy” Finnauer. A great debut performance for the car saw it finish 6th outright and 2nd in class to the JPS Team’s lead driver pairing of Richards/Longhurst.
At the end of 1987 the JPS Team was disbanded and all the cars went back to BMW Australia who moved them on to Peter Brock’s Mobil team following his much publicised split with Holden in 87. Brock reunited with former Bathurst winning co-driver and reigning ATCC Champion Richards for the 88 season. The car carried the coveted no.1 throughout the ATCC which saw Richards out perform team leader Brock to finish 4th on 58 points, where Brock took 6th on 47 points.
For the Endurance Championship that year, Brock moved into sharing this car with Richards. It carried the 05 no. associated with ‘Peter Perfect” to win the Pepsi 250 at Oran Park and in the Sandown 500 before the no. 56 was inflicted on the team by the FIA who ran that year’s Bathurst 1000.
In 1989 Sydney privateer John Cotter purchased the car and it remained in his possession until sold in 96 to Paul Nelson who competed in the Supertouring Championship under Faber-Castell sponsorship.
In 96 Perth based Nick Rahimtulla bought the car and competed locally until it was sold to current owner David Towe in 2011. Historic Group A Championship titles in 2018, 21, 24 & 25 have been added to the Pepsi 250 win all those years ago.
The car will be continuing to contest the Heritage Touring Cars Group A championship until sold. It will therefore obviously be in genuine race-ready condition.
An extensive spares package is included in the purchase price which includes 6 spare diffs of various ratios, 14 spare wheels, many inner and outer wheel rims, a new engine (yet to be completed and sealed by the M.A. eligibility officer, 2 spare gearboxes and a box of spare gearbox parts, body panels, grilles, headlights etc. If it belongs with the car, it goes with the car. *Normally aspirated, 300 hp.
*5 speed Getrag gearbox although a 6 speed Prodrive box was used at Bathurst in 1988.
*Left hand drive, 9 x 17 inch wheels. 4 spot Brembo Racing brakes all round.
*Weight 980kg.
