In the late 1960’s Sir Jack Brabham retired from international motor racing and bought a Ford dealership on the Hume Highway at Greenacre in Sydney’s west. The Ford XW Falcon GTHO Phase II is arguably the toughest of all the GTHO models Ford made. With all of the 267 examples produced having “solid” 351 4V Cleveland engines, 31 spline Top Loader gearboxes and differentials. The GTR-X was a fascinating concept from the get-go; A fibreglass body, over a steel “ladder” chassis, which may seem exotic to an Australian market, but GM had been successfully using that technique with its iconic sports car, the Corvette, from 1953’s C1. Come 1969, the Corvette had evolved to the swoopy C3 guise, featuring independent suspension, four-wheel disc brakes and wild 427 L88 spec’ motors.
