When you ask someone to name, describe or point out a rally car, it is highly likely that a Subaru Impreza WRX will be at the top of the list. No other car has evoked the magic and mastery of rallying, with names such as Colin McRae, Richard Burns and Petter Solberg all winning WRC titles behind the wheel of one. And in the ARC, championship-winning pilots include Possum Bourne, Cody Crocker, Simon Evans and Molly Taylor. Of all the variants of WRX that competed in rallying over the years, without question the most iconic Impreza is the GC8 series from the mid/late 90s. And this four-door example that is now being offered for sale is an amazing example of Subaru’s famed racer.

Freshly built at the start of 2023, this 1999 Subaru Impreza WRX has competed in six rallies in the past 12 months and presents in excellent condition with its recently painted (February 2024) Royal Silver exterior hue. And of course, it sports the Impreza’s signature gold wheels wrapped in Pirelli Scorpion rally tyres.

Motorsport Australia log booked (#**********) and with a fully welded tower to tower cage (#72966), the WRX is rally ready for the ARC or state-based competition. And if you’re serious about your rallying and want to be up the pointy end of the field, this is an incredibly competitive car that has the ability to get its next owner standing on the podium.

The WRX is running a short block EJ207 with new forged bottom end, forged pistons/rods and Roger Clark cams/springs, as well as a Roger Clark timing belt tensioner. The turbocharger has been upgraded to a VF53 twin scroll for maximum performance as well as a larger fuel pump, injectors and fuel rails. A 2.5-inch custom stainless steel exhaust from the turbo back has been fitted which not only maximises engine efficiency but also enhances the familiar Subaru boxer growl. Anti-lag is available at the flick of a switch and everything is controlled by a brand new Link G4X ECU. All engine work has been carried out by the experts at Race Torque Engineering in Perth who are no strangers to building ultra-competitive rally cars.

A six-speed sequential Modena gearbox with Group N ratios has been mated to the EJ207, along with a Modena strain gauge. Power is sent to all four wheels via a Modena front differential and Cusco R160 3.9 rear differential, managed by a Map DCCD Motorsport Differential Control System. A brand new Exedy Heavy Duty clutch has also been installed, as well as a new radiator and STI intercooler with cooling spray (plus a 12L tank). The Impreza’s suspension has been upgraded to MCA Gold Series adjustable shocks with remote canisters as well as a range of STI suspension components. New rotors have been fitted with WinmaX race pads (90% left), braided brake lines all round and a hydraulic handbrake.

From a safety perspective, no stone has been left unturned. New OMP winged seats and Go Gear 3-inch harnesses were installed in early 2023 as well as RallySafe wiring, a Zero Noise intercom and navigator light. Custom heavy duty aluminium bash plates provide comprehensive protection to the underbody of the WRX. Also installed is a helmet net, heated windscreen, co-driver footrest and a Maximum Motorsport adjustable seat rail for the driver. And for night stages, there is a light pod with a set of brand new Stedi lights. A spares package is offered with the sale, including drive shafts, tail shafts, track rods, rear bumper and a range of steering components. Six rally rims and tyres are also included.

For anyone thinking about getting involved in rallying or perhaps a competitor looking to switch from 2WD to 4WD competition, this Subaru represents a fantastic opportunity to secure yourself a highly competitive WRX that simply could not be built for the reserve price. Only being sold to make way for another project, you would be hard-pressed to find a better GC8 rally car locally or abroad with comparable specification. This really is an amazing car that is now ready for its new owner to enjoy.
